TD-SCDMA Update
March 03, 2007
- China's National Development and Reform Commission hiked the cost of the second-round TD-SCDMA trials starting in March 2007. The sum has been revised up to 26.7 billion RMB (US$3.45 billion; US$1 = 7.75 RMB). Half of the expenditure will be used in constructing 15,000 base stations, and the other half will go to core network equipment. China Mobile, responsible for TD-SCDMA trials in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, and Tianjian, is expected to account for nearly 90% of the cost.

- According to an AFX News report, senior officials at China Netcom confirmed that the company had no interest in developing the homegrown TD-SCDMA technology but is instead eyeing China Unicom's GSM network for tapping the mobile service market. China Netcom's existing TD-SCDMA trials in Qingdao are expected to be transferred to China Mobile.

- Nokia and TD Tech announced the completion of their TD-SCDMA interconnection trial based on 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) specifications in January 2007. The trial was conducted between TD Tech's TD-SCDMA wireless access network and Nokia's 3GPP/Rel 4/5 core network in their respective Beijing R&D centers. The project was carried out using a comprehensive TD-SCDMA system and encompassed tests of AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) voice calls, synchronous voice and data services, video calls, data streaming, and other data functions.
